Beauties

In the eighteenth century it became popular to collect the most striking passages from a work (or a group of works) and to highlight them as “beauties.” Sometimes such collections focused on a single author, as when Pope drew readers’ attention to his favorite passages in his edition of Shakespeare by printing quotation marks down the margin. Collections of extracts from many authors are anthologies.
