  • Memoirs of My Life, ed. G. A. Bonnard (London: Nelson, 1966). Still the best composite edition of the Memoirs, with extensive notes. Another excellently annotated edition of the Memoirs, despite the editor's avowed hostility to Gibbon, is that of G. B. Hill, The Life of Edward Gibbon . . . by Himself (London: Methuen, 1900).
  • The Autobiographies of Edward Gibbon, ed. Sir John Murray (London: John Murray, 1896). Contains the texts of all six drafts of the Memoirs.
  • History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, ed. J. B. Bury, 7 vols. (London: Methuen, 1896-1900). New editions of various volumes and the whole work until 1928. Reprint of the 1909-14 version, New York: AMS, 1974. Textually superseded by the edition of David Womersley, 3 vols. (London: Penguin, 1997). Womersley's edition also provides information about Gibbon's sources and an extensive introduction, as well as a reprint of Gibbon's Vindication of Chapters XV and XVI.
  • The English Essays of Edward Gibbon, ed. Patricia B. Craddock (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1972). Includes all of Gibbon's miscellaneous writings in English, including the Vindication and the anonymously-published Critical Observations on the Sixth Book of Vergil's "Aeneid." Does not include any of Gibbon's journals or letters, or his two major works in English, the Autobiography and the History.
  • The Miscellaneous Works of Edward Gibbon, ed. John Lord Sheffield, 2 vols. (London: Strahan, 1796). Includes works in English and French and a version of the memoirs, all heavily edited. The expanded version, in 5 vols. octavo, includes some works formerly published in the original French in English translation only, as well as Gibbon's first work, his Essai sur l'étude de la littérature, in both French and English. It was published by John Murray in 1815 [dated 1814], along with a quarto volume containing most of the added material, for the benefit of the owners of the 1796 Miscellaneous Works.
